Simple is Better – Helping Inmates Now – March Our Monthly Resolution

Matthew 5:42a - When people ask you for something, give it to them.

How many times have you offered to help … and there is crickets?

You’ve offered to help but there’s no follow through. Or the request just seem to fit into what you are interested in.

Well, today, I have a very specific request for you. And I hope a few of you will help out.

Every month, my friend Stacie and I pick a Wisconsin-based non-profit organization to encourage people to support. People who are doing real things to help real people right now.

In March of 2023, we chose Giving is Good as Our Monthly Resolution organization. Based in Green Bay, WI, their goal is to get good things into the hands of people who need them. They offer a variety of different programs.

We’re promoting Giving is Good for March 2026 because they have a specific need. And we want to help fill it.

Recently, Michelle, the founder of Giving Is Good put out this appeal:

“When a Sergeant at the correctional institute we partner with emails us with the word “desperate” in it, we take action immediately!

One of our programs is called “Inmates Helping OUT”. If you look back at our page you can read some pretty inspirational stories. We bring the participants of the knitters program YARN, and the approved inmates knit and crochet items we then receive back to use in our programs for those in need. It’s such a win/win! They make the most beautiful items! Hats, scarves, mittens, afghans, etc. (It’s cold out there.)

Various yarns in soft pastels and white fill a bin, with visible labels reading "Bernat" and "Softee Baby." The mood is cozy and creative.

But get this…The men cannot knit or crochet without donated yarn. It must be donated.

Well . . . they are completely out of yarn. They’re unable to make us items. They have stopped knitting. No yarn? No hats. These men take incredible care and precision with their work. They love to know that despite where they are, they have an opportunity to GIVE BACK and DO GOOD. I meet with these men yearly. They are truly dedicated to making sure to create items that others need and will use and enjoy.

Two things: Do you have yarn? Any yarn. We will take it.

OR…if you don’t have any yarn, would you consider donating financially to us? Any amount will help. We will go buy the yarn! I’ll fill my vehicle!"

Here’s my question: can we help them get some yarn so those inmates can get back to knitting all the good things they make? Think about it. The inmates have an opportunity to do something productive to help someone else. The receivers of the hats, scarves, etc., have products they can use. And WE get to help orchestrate it all.

Knit hats and scarves in pastel blue, pink, and green are piled atop plastic bags. The setting is a casual backdrop, evoking warmth.

I know. Green Bay may not be nearby so dropping off yarn may not be practical. Maybe you could donate $20 and help Giving Is Good buy yarn and deliver it to the inmates?

Here’s how:

Two hands holding a red heart inside a purple heart-shaped border. Text reads "giving is good," conveying a message of kindness.

It’s not very often we repeat a non-profit organization. Yet we feel there is such a specific need and a great program that we want to help keep it going! Again, thank you for your continued support of Our Monthly Resolution.

So, please consider this your “ask” to do something good today. If your heart feels tugged, please help the Giving Is Good folks, the inmates and the people who receive the knitted items. Thank you!

Blessings –

Lord God – There are so many different ways we can serve. Big ways, little ways, ways that impact a few and sometimes even more. Thank you for the “ask” for yarn. Bless those who are part of this program and in some small way, even through prayer, may we support their efforts and work. Amen.
