Simple is Better: Providing Resources for Domestic Violence

Wisconsin is one state in the U.S. One state. Yet read these statistics:

Each year, Wisconsin estimates that 94,299 Wisconsinites experience domestic violence each year.

For me, this is a staggering number.

Even more challenging? Many experiences of domestic violence go unseen and unreported, which means the actual number may be higher. Some people aren’t sure if what they are experiencing is domestic violence. Others feel fear, uncertainty, and not knowing where to turn for help.

These thoughts make my heart feel sad. And why drawing awareness to domestic violence is so important.

October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month. And this is why we have chosen The Women’s Center in Waukesha County as our October Our Monthly Resolution non-profit organization.

The Women’s Center provides a safe place to turn, offering free and confidential services, advocacy, and connections to resources for individuals and families affected by domestic violence. They welcome and serve survivors of all ages, recognizing that their unique experience informs the perspective of each person. They are committed to providing safety, shelter, and support to empower all impacted by domestic abuse, sexual violence, child abuse, and trafficking.

The Women’s Center takes their vision seriously and sees themselves as the catalyst to create an engaged community that does not tolerate or accept interpersonal violence. This is why they provide abundant resources to ensure a future free from domestic violence.

Founded in 1977, The Women’s Center is Waukesha County’s (in Wisconsin) only agency of its kind in the county. They provide a range of life-saving and life-changing programs and services that heal and empower adults and children. They build on their philosophy of ensuring survivors’ needs are met, children are protected, and families are healed. Programs are tailored to meet the unique needs of each client while providing basic food, shelter, clothing and transportation needs.

All of their services are offered confidentially and at no cost. Programs include: an emergency shelter and 24-Hour Hotline; domestic violence and sexual abuse 1:1 support; legal advocacy; transitional living and housing assistance; community education and violence prevention; rape crisis response; employment coaching and life-skills development; translation/interpretation in any language; and free on-site childcare for clients.

We applaud the variety of services The Women’s Center provides and their commitment to help anyone in need. Will you join us in supporting their great programs as part of October Domestic Violence Awareness Month? If you prefer to support a similar organization in your community, please do so!

It’s difficult for people who have not experienced domestic violence to wrap their heads around how difficult it may be to leave a domestic situation. When they are able to, I pray they are able to embrace available resources to help them start over.

Blessings –

Dianne

Holy God – It’s difficult to fully understand what someone else is going through. The daily struggles that they feel. Open my heart to being more compassionate towards those who are really struggling. May they discover helpful resources available to them and embrace them. Amen.
